Explore, Learn, Lead

WEOL exists to develop capable outdoor leaders through experiential education, technical skill development, and responsible stewardship of wilderness environments.

Who
We
Are

The Wilderness Education and Outdoor Leadership (WEOL) program at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is dedicated to developing skilled, confident, and responsible outdoor leaders. As part of LTCC, the program combines academic learning with field-based instruction, hands-on experiences, and real-world problem-solving to prepare students for careers in outdoor education, guiding, and wilderness leadership.

Our instructors are experienced professionals who bring expertise, mentorship, and a passion for the outdoors, ensuring that every student grows in technical skill, leadership, and environmental stewardship. Across diverse terrains, from rivers and mountains to forests and backcountry trails, the program emphasizes safety, collaboration, and sustainability, giving students the tools to lead with confidence in any outdoor setting.

Our Commitment to the Environment

As part of our commitment to responsible outdoor education, the WEOL program at LTCC works to reduce our environmental impact while improving safety for students in the field. Our 9-seat uplifted Chevrolet Suburbans allow us to transport entire groups together, reducing the number of vehicles traveling to trailheads and recreation sites. In a single 12-week winter quarter, one vehicle can save approximately 1,287 gallons of fuel, remove up to eight additional vehicles from the road and parking areas, and improve both student safety and emergency response capability. Equipped with four-wheel drive, winter-ready tires, reinforced suspension, roof racks, and custom gear storage, these vehicles help us access the outdoors responsibly while protecting the landscapes where we teach.

Learn by Doing

At WEOL, we believe the best learning happens in the field. Students don’t just study leadership, navigation, or risk management...they practice it. From multi-day backpacking trips and whitewater rafting to rock climbing and winter mountaineering, every experience reinforces core skills while building confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Join a Community That Cares

At WEOL, you’re not just learning skills, you’re joining a network of passionate outdoor leaders. Our students, instructors, and alumni share a commitment to adventure, teamwork, and stewardship. Step into the outdoors with us and become part of a community that values exploration, safety, and the natural world.
